Particularities of the noun number – Metaphony

Commonly, when referring to the issue of particularities concerning to Normative Grammar, then we stick to the practice of written language. Such assertion resides in the fact that it requires a certain skill on the part of the issuer in relation to the preconceived molds of the standard language.
Therefore, we attribute to speech a less formal character, where the use of colloquialisms prevails, conferring a greater degree of affinity between the interlocutors of the speech.

However, especially to the plural of nouns, occurs a phenomenon called "Umlaut",in which there are phonological alterations between one form and another.
And undeniably, it is necessary to pay attention to its correct use, since such alterations are particularly restricted to the speech level.
It is about alternating the timbre of the vowel, which sometimes appears closed in the singular, sometimes open in the pluralized form.
Let's look at the most common cases:
