constipation or trapped bowel are popular names that designate the constipation, a problem that affects a large portion of the population and is characterized by the elimination of very hard stools, usually accompanied by difficulty and pain during evacuation.
Constipation is a frequent problem in children, women and the elderly and is usually associated with a diet poor in fibers and little fluid intake. However, it can often be a symptom of some bowel pathology, such as hemorrhoids and cancer colorectal. It is noteworthy that some drug treatments and chemotherapy can cause it, in addition to problems such as stress and depression.
As the main symptoms of constipation, we can mention:
- Dry, hard and small stools;
- Pain or difficulty in eliminating stools;
- Boards for the elimination of very bulky stools;
- Evacuation less than three times a week;
- Fecal leakage;
- Pain and abdominal distension;
- Blood in the stool;
- Feeling of incomplete emptying.
To carry out a diagnosis, the physician should review the patient's history. After knowing the evacuation habits, exams are carried out to verify the cause of constipation. Digital rectal exams, blood tests, X-rays, colonoscopy, among others can be done.
To treatment, an increase in the consumption of fiber, which can be obtained from foods such as cereals, vegetables and legumes, and the intake of a lot of fluids is usually indicated. In cases where the patient has very hard stools in the final portions of the intestine (fecaloma), intestinal lavage may be indicated. In addition, it is important to treat the cause of constipation, which, as mentioned earlier, can have different origins.
It is important to emphasize that the use of laxatives should only be done when there is a medical recommendation. These medications can cause an exaggerated loss of fluids and minerals, causing serious health problems. Always choose to modify your diet and eat foods with fiber.
