The 5 skills required in Writing Enem

At this point, you should already know the importance of the grade in the Enem essay: as it is worth a lot, it can help to increase the overall grade of the exam.

To do so, let's go through each of the five skills of the reference matrix for writing, which are used as evaluation criteria and, thus, you will be prepared for what lies ahead.

Each competency is worth 200 points. As they are not met, your grade will reduce.

There are 6 scoring levels for each of the skills: the highest is worth 200, which is reduced by 40 points each level down, in a total of 6 levels, ie:

  • 1st level: 200 points
  • 2nd level: 160 points
  • 3rd level: 120 points
  • 4th level: 80 points
  • 5th level: 40 points
  • 6th level: 0 points

Now, we explain each of them to you:

Competence 1: Domain of Portuguese language

You must show that you have good knowledge of the Portuguese language in the formal modality.

In summary, this competence includes: vocabulary, rules of accentuation and punctuation, spelling, separation of syllables, use of hyphens and upper and lower case letters, concordance, rulership, absence of marks of the orality.

It is worth remembering that knowledge of the accentuation rules and the new orthographic agreement are essential. In other words, it's not worth having Portuguese errors and grammatical deviations, as this can lower your grade a lot.

Competency 2: Understanding the proposal

From the complementary texts, the Enem participant must understand the proposal of the essay to develop their text coherently, and demonstrate its cultural repertoire, using information from different areas of knowledge.

Furthermore, it should focus on the structural aspects of a dissertation-argumentative text in prose: theme (subject), thesis, arguments and intervention proposal.

The most important point to be evaluated is the participant's reading and writing skills, that is, to demonstrate that they understood and defined the thematic cut presented.

Competency 3: Organization and defense

Nothing is more important than knowing how to select the main arguments on the topic. Therefore, in this part the criteria revolve around the argumentation, as well as the participants' interpretation of some aspects of the theme.

It is very important to make a text project, which consists of planning what will be written, which arguments will be used, the moment to present them (chaining of ideas).

In addition, organization is fundamental for presenting consistent arguments and defending the point of view. The intelligibility of the text is a fundamental part of this competence. It brings together the selection of arguments, vocabulary precision, the relationship between the parts of the text and even the adequacy of the content to the current context.

Competence 4: Linguistic knowledge and argumentation

The main linguistic mechanism is the cohesion used for the logical chaining of parts of the text.

Therefore, understand the connectives well (conjunctions, adverbs, phrases, prepositions, etc.) and the function of each of them it will certainly be useful to make your text even more coherent, as well as helping to build the argument.

In this competence, the logical and formal structure between the parts of the text, called the textual cohesion. Thus, the relationship between the paragraphs must present a logical sequence of the exposed ideas.

Competency 5: Intervention proposal

In the final part, and from the arguments presented throughout the text, the participant must present solutions for what was discussed.

All this taking into account aspects such as citizenship, human values ​​and cultural diversity.

The participant who uses expressions, prejudiced ideas and incites violence, will soon lose the 200 points that are worth this competence.
