What is Cytoskeleton?

The cytoskeleton is a filamentous structure formed by protein fibers and present in eukaryotic cells.

Structure

The cytoskeleton is a dynamic structure that is present in the cytoplasm of the cells. It resembles a network, being formed by microtubules and microfilaments (intermediate and actin) consisting of proteins.

US microtubules we found the protein called tubulin. These structures are the largest and thickest that form the cytoskeleton, being long, firm and hollow.

US actin filaments (or microfilaments), we find the actin and other proteins that are attached to it. They are thinner and more flexible structures that act on cell movements.

Finally, we intermediate filaments we found some fibrous proteins responsible for cell tissue stability.

Roles

The main function of the cytoskeleton is to provide support and resistance. Furthermore, it is related to cell movement, as it helps in cell locomotion, for example, amoebas (amoeboid movements).

Proteins present in microtubules are responsible for cell organization and the formation of cilia and flagella.

As for intracellular movements (within cells), the cytoskeleton helps transport organelles within the cytoplasm.

As for its function, it resembles the bones and muscles of the body in that it is related to displacement and muscle contraction. In other words, he is the "cellular skeleton".

Thus, the cytoskeleton collaborates with the cellular form, the transport of substances and the organization of the organelles present in the cell.
