Tenths, hundredths and thousandths

The representation in tenths, hundredths and thousandthsis a way of dividing an integer into fractions. Its numerical representation occurs through the use of comma or fractions. They can be used to represent amounts (such as money), sizes (in measurements of length, capacity, volume, mass) and in many other situations.

tenths

Let's look at this example:

1 meter can be divided into 10 equal parts, like this:

1 m ÷ 10 = 0.1 m

Here we observe that the use of the comma was necessary to separate the 0 (zero) meter from 1 tenth from the subway.

Now, think with me, where can we find this representation closer to our reality?

Length measurements

Imagine that Laura is 1.5 m tall. We can represent it like this:

1.5 m = 1 m + 0.5 m (0.5 tenths)

It is important to know that the 1st order to the right of the comma is called tenth because it indicates the tenth part or the tenth parts of the whole number.

We can also make this representation through fractions. Let's see what fraction is represented by the following colleagues:

  • John has 1/10 - reads a tenth or 0.1.

  • Ana has 2/10 - reads two tenths or 0.2.

  • Mario owns 3/10 - reads three tenths or 0.3.

  • Lucia has 4/10 - reads four tenths or 0.4.

hundredths

Along with tenths, we also have other notations that we should know about. O hundredth is used by us daily when we make use of cash, for example, in values less than 1 real.

Take the case of João, who went to the market with a R$ 0.50 cent coin to buy candies, so he has 50 cents, i.e, 0.50 cents, value that can also be represented as follows: 50/100.

See other examples:

10 cents = 0.10 = 10/100 - read ten hundredths.

70 cents = 0.70 = 70/100 - read seventy hundredths.

Cents are the hundredth part of the real.

thousandths

We also have representation in thousandths, that occurs when we take a part of 1000. For example:

3/1000 — reads three thousandths.

56/1000 — reads fifty-six thousandths.
