O International Literacy Day, which takes place on September 8, is a date that seeks to highlight the importance of literacy in the broader contexts of society. This date was created by the United Nations (UN) on October 26, 1966, at the 14th session of the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), being commemorated for the first time in 1967.

Even if the literacy be based on learning from alphabet and its essential use for Reading and writing, It is important to understand that being literate goes far beyond knowing letters as well as numbers. literacy reflects the social, political and economic context of a country, allowing to reduce social inequalities, poverty, in addition to stimulating population growth in a conscious way, with balance in nature and peace among all peoples.
It is also important to say that increase the number of choiceat does not mean a real popularization
school for everyone and that everyone will learn to read and write. This can be seen in Brazil, as there has been a great expansion of schools, but that does not mean that all our children are literate.Brazil, when compared to other countries, is always among the worst positions. This is rated by international tests, and the last one was in 2015, which was the International Student Assessment Program (PISA). In this assessment, among the 70 countries that participated, Brazil ranked 59th in the aspect related to reading.
This assessment aims to analyze the performance, in the areas of reading, math and science, of 15-year-old students regularly enrolled in basic education. In the national assessment carried out among the 27 states of our federation, 9 obtained a score below 404 points. The maximum score is 500 points.
Seeking to change this situation in the last 40 years, Brazilian educational life has gone through several methodological fads, in which various methods are incorporated to aid literacy. Some of these methods are:
alphabetical method or spelling;
phonetic method;
global method;
syllabic method.
However, we know that just changing the method is not enough to solve Brazil's problem. To really change this picture, we need invest in education for students to achieve better results, seeking good experiences throughout Brazil and expanding them. To try to improve this context, Brazil has the National Education Plan (PNE).Among its goals, we can highlight:
alphabetize all children up to the 3rd year of elementary school;
raise the literacy rate of the population aged 15 and over;
somehow eradicate total illiteracy;
halve functional illiteracy.
Thus, several programs seek to eradicate illiteracy in Brazil.
