Powers with negative exponent

Powers they are multiplications where all factors are or represent the same number. Operations with potencies have some properties, such as involving a potency that has negative exponent.

To fully understand this property, it is necessary to know the potencies of fractions well. Come on?

Fraction Powers

They are potencies whose base is a fraction. Suppose the base is a/b and the exponent n. The property used to calculate this power says that we must solve theno and bno. The results will be the numerator and denominator of the resulting fraction. Watch:

As an example, let's determine the result of the following power:

Fractions with negative exponent

When the exponent of a fraction is negative, we must do the following to enable the calculations:

  • Write the base in fraction form if it is not already in that form;

  • Invert the base and sign of the exponent;

  • Will use property of powers of fraction recalled above.

Mathematically, this property is written as follows:

Examples

1st case: 7 – 3

Use the three steps described above to solve this example: transform the base to a fraction, invert the base and sign of the exponent, and use the fraction power property:

2nd case:

To solve this exercise, do as in the previous one:
