Orthoepia: what is it, examples, orthoepia x prosody

Orthoepy is the part of the grammar that deals with word pronunciation rules. Therefore, you make an orthoepy error if you pronounce a word incorrectly. For example: saying “privilege” instead of the correct form “privilege”. The prosody error, on the other hand, is associated with the incorrect choice of stressed syllable of a word. This happens, for example, when you say “UKim" instead of the correct form "ruIM”.

What is orthoepia?

You need to think a little bit before saying certain words.

When a person pronounces a wordcorrectly, she is following the rules of orthoepia. So if you don't pronounce a word correctly, you're making an orthoepy error.

orthoepy errors

a person commits orthoepy error when you say:

  • landedsact instead of landssact;

  • rOba instead of rorba;

  • bandHeyja, instead of bandandalready;

  • fitsreadrose instead of headlawriver;

  • ihindrance instead of andhindrance;

  • thereargatixa instead of lagartixa;

  • mendingo instead of mendigo;

  • prandvillain instead of privillage;

  • imbigo instead of umbigo.

Notice the difference in pronunciations? That's right! The correct pronunciation is: landing, steal, tray, hairdresser, hindrance, gecko, beggar, privilege and navel. On the other hand, orthoepia errors are: landing, roba, tray, hairdresser, impecilho, lark, begging, privilege and imbigo.

However, these are just a few orthoepy errors, as there are many others. Therefore, it is necessary to always be very attentive and attentive when speaking certain words.

Difference between orthoepia and prosody

Both orthoepia and prosody are related to the pronunciation of words, but then what's the difference? The prosody refers only to the pronunciation of the stressed syllable. If you don't remember, the stressed syllable is the strongest. Therefore, it is correct to say:

  • At thebeautiful, rather than At thebel;

  • ruim, rather than ruim;

  • rubrica, instead of rubriquettes;

  • ciclope instead of ciclops;

  • graceyouto, instead of freeíto.

As with orthoepia, there are many other examples of prosody error. We quote here just a few of them. So the next time you use these words, say: NoBEL, ruIM, ruBRIhey ciCLOstand up and graceTUIto. However, stay tuned and watch out, because some words have double prosody, that is, they can be pronounced in two ways. Here are some examples.

  • orthoésink or orthoepiThe

  • Proalreadyuseful or projectuseful

  • Reptilde or repuseful

  • X androx or xepurple

  • hieroglyph or hieroglifo
