Did I do it or did I do it? Do you know the answer to this question? Have you ever stopped to think about it? Well, the Portuguese language is a box of surprises always ready to be opened and discovered! It's time to learn the right way and avoid mistakes when writing your text. Come on?
First of all, it is important that you know that the correct thing will always be “it was me”, not “it was me”, because the verb needs to agree with the subject of the sentence and, as the subject is expressed in the personal pronoun "I", the proper agreement will be made with the verb to do in the perfect tense, that is, "went". Nobody says “I went”, so there's no discussion about that, right?
Now, let's answer the initial question: “I did it or did I do it”? Watch:
► The “who” is a third person pronoun and the verb must agree with it, regardless of whether another pronoun appears beforehand. Watch:
it was me who did.
Was you who did.
it was us who did.
Although there are other pronouns in the clauses – me, you and us – the verb will always agree with the pronoun “who”, right? So, say or write “I did it”, “it was you who did it” and “we did it” is incorrect.
You can also, if you prefer, instead of using “I did it”, opt for “I did it”, changing the pronoun “who” by the relative pronoun “that” and making the appropriate agreement with the verb. Watch:
► I did it: Here, the relative pronoun “that” does not have the power of a subject in the prayer, therefore, the verb must agree with the pronoun that comes before it, in this case, the verb will agree with the pronoun “I”:
Went me what I did.
you went you what you did.
Was he what did.
We were we what We did.
According to the cultured norm of the Portuguese language, you can use the “I did it” or the “I did it”, just don't mix the two ways. Therefore, it is inappropriate to say or write, for example, "we made it" or "we made it", always remember that the verb must agree with the elements "who" and "who" according to the explanation above. Good studies!
