You might not know it yet, but there are important differences between the expressions none and none. You certainly hadn't noticed before because, when it comes to sonority, the two expressions are practically the same, so it's not always possible to differentiate them in orality. However, you must be careful to make the proper use of terms in written texts, especially if you want to adapt to the cultured norm.
To eliminate this curious Portuguese doubt, Escola Kids has prepared a guide on the differences between none and none that you can consult whenever necessary. Come on? Enjoy your reading and good studies!
None or none?
linguistic differences
Basic rule: O indefinite pronounnone can be exchanged for another equivalent: some. not one, expression formed by the conjunction nor followed by the numeral a, can be replaced by not even one or not one. If you are in doubt, just follow this tip. Now follow a more detailed explanation of the subject:
Not one: What does it mean, how and when to use this expression correctly:
not one, expression formed by conjunction nor and by the numeral a,equals not even one or not one (or not a single). It has a quantitative sense when used in sentences like these:
not one classmate came to my party.
I did not win not one toy!
not one another friend is cooler than you!
None: What does it mean, how and when to use the indefinite pronoun correctly:
None is an indefinite variable pronoun, as it admits the inflection of gender and number (none, none, *none). Equals some, being its negative form. See the examples:
None house withstood the tornado.
None person attended the book launch.
Cash none is able to buy happiness.
*None:
You found it strange, didn't you? For know that the plural of the indefinite pronounnone exists, despite being little used. It must be employed when the none is before a plural noun, thus agreeing with that term. See how it can appear in a sentence:
Do not know none restaurants in this region.
“Simple was the furniture, none adornments, a rosewood bookcase, with thick in-quarter books and folio; a desk, two resting chairs and little else”. (Axe of Assisi, Helena).
Attention!
There are situations in which both expressions can be used without harming communication in written texts. This is because the indefinite pronoun none is the result of the agglutination of the conjunction nor with the numeral a. See some examples:
None student complained about the math assessment.
or
not one student complained about the math assessment.
