Suddenly or suddenly?

Sometimes, when we write some words or expressions, some doubts arise. orthography, that is, with respect to correct way to write them. This happens, for example, with the expression/locution "suddenly", whose meaning effect is very similar to: "suddenly", "of impetus", "all of a sudden", "suddenly".

When we pronounce (speak) this expression/locution, we hardly notice the space between the preposition “of” and the substantive “suddenly” and, for this reason, we can think that, in writing, they are together and we spell it like this: “suddenly”.

First, it is necessary to understand that the word "suddenly" does not exist in our Portuguese language. Afterwards, it is necessary to observe the syntactic function of this phrase to understand why it is written this way and not another.

The expression "suddenly" has a syntactic function of adverb in time or of mode and therefore it is a adverbial phrase formed by preposition “of” and the substantive “suddenly”. In this case, the preposition “of” precedes the

substantive "suddenly", but it doesn't join him, so, there is no fusion between the two terms, but connection so that the expression has full meaning.

Note the application of this expression/locution in some sentences:

  • she entered the room suddenly and I got a hell of a scare.

  • Suddenly, I turned 30 years old.

  • Suddenly you realize that you no longer care about material goods, but about affective ones.

  • the boy came out screaming suddenly and scared us all.
