Syntactic functions of possessive pronouns

Note the words highlighted in the following sentences:

(1) Of all the houses I visited, I liked theyour.

(2) I tiedyourhair.

We note that they express a sense of ownership, don't we? This is because these words are possessive pronouns. Do you remember them? See the table below and recall the forms that these pronouns can take:

Returning to the initial examples, it is important to note that, despite the morphological similarity, the same does not occur in relation to the syntactic function of the pronouns “your” and “your”, that is, they work differently at the syntactical level. In (1), the pronoun has the function of indirect object.In (2), the pronoun works as adnominal deputy.

Thus, possessive pronouns can have different syntactic functions. Let's look at them in detail now:

  • When the possessive pronoun has the value of adjective, it will have the function of adnominal deputy:

  • When the possessive pronoun has the value of substantive, it occurs as head of a noun phrase, It is known as noun pronoun and can perform the following syntactic functions:
