The learning we acquired through the text "Period composed of coordination and subordination” will be of great benefit for us to continue our study of subordinate prayers. Well, we already have a notion that represents being one of the most important: subordinate clauses are dependent on each other. And it is precisely because of this syntactic dependence that they receive different classifications. Thus, in our meeting, we will meet the substantive subordinates, which are subdivided into subjective, direct objective, indirect objective, apositive and nominal complements. Strange to you? Of course not, because you know that we already have knowledge of everything, even if only a little bit.
So, let's look at it one by one:
Substantive subordinate clauses are subdivided into specific groups
Subjective substantive subordinate clauses
As we know, the subordinates are dependent on each other, that is, the second clause depends on the first to make sense. Thus, the subjective clauses act as the subject of the first clause, also called the main clause.. Let's see an example?
Is important that you be a friend.
Transforming this period, we have:
It's important for you to be my friend. Thus, we have the little word “that” acts as a subject, and the clause is classified as a subjective substantive subordinate clause.
Direct objective substantive subordinate clauses
These clauses act as the direct object of the verb referring to the first clause. Let's look at an example:
I want to that you be my friend.
Imagine if the prayer consisted only of the following sayings: I want... now who wants, wants something, agree? Thus, the highlighted clause is classified as a direct objective substantive subordinate clause.
Indirect objective substantive subordinate clauses
They are those that fulfill the role of indirect object of the first prayer.
I don't doubt that you are my friend.
Who doubts, doubts something, isn't it? Well, the term that is highlighted represents the indirect objective substantive subordinate clause.
Nominal substantive substantive subordinate clauses
It's simple, they are those that act as a nominal complement to the first prayer. Do you want to meet one of them?
I need to that you be my friend.
We have that the underlined term, because it completes the meaning of a name, which in this case is represented by "need", represents the noun noun noun subordinate clause.
Subordinate clauses of appositional substantives
They are those who play the role of affixing the main prayer. Let's observe the prayer:
I have a need: that you be my friend.
The highlighted term represents the appositional noun subordinate clause.
Subordinate predicative substantive clauses
They are represented by those that play the role of predicative of the subject of the main clause. Want to see?
the need is that you be my friend.
Note that we have a connecting verb, which we already know, represented by the verb to be (is). Well, what comes after him represents O predicative, as it confers a qualification on the subject, here represented by “the need”.
In this way, the bit of the clause demarcated by the underline represents the predicative substantive subordinate clause.
