Have you noticed that at each meeting we have you have the opportunity to learn a little more about the curiosities, the surprises that our Portuguese language has in store for us? Well, in this meeting, in particular, it will not be different.
The subject? Perhaps you haven't even stopped to think why some verbs linked to oblique pronouns are accented and others not. Well, this is an unbeatable mission that will make us remember those little rules of syllabic separation, as well as the tonic and graphic accents, remember? Maybe not, but... let's go to some examples, so that you'll learn more quickly about the subject at hand:
review it
REPRODUCE IT
ASSIGN IT
DISTRIBUTE IT
LOVE HIM
COMPLETE IT
TRANSLATE IT
DISTINGUISH IT
RETURN IT
Simple, isn't it? Wow! Didn't you notice? Now, some forms appear accentuated and others not: this is the great mystery. Because?
This is what we will discover after separating the syllables of each of these verb forms mentioned above, but with one condition: forgetting the oblique pronoun "lo", as it will not be part of this division, since it only acts as a complement to the verbs. So, just to leave it so aside, let's use the ellipses to symbolize it, ok?
Let's go then?
RE-VIEW...
RE-PRO-DU-ZI...
A-TRI-BU-Í...
DIS-TRI-BU-Í...
LOVE...
FINISHED...
TRA-DU-ZI...
DIS-TIN-GUI...
GIVES IT BACK...
A task successfully completed, let us now return to the knowledge we have about the rules of accentuation, starting from the examples we have just seen:
GIVES IT BACK
RE – SEE → All oxytone words ending in
A – BAD “a”, “e”, “o” and “in”, followed or not by “s”, are accented.
CON - CLU - Í
DIS – TRI – BU - Í → Accentuate the “u” and “i” tonics of the hiatus when
A – TRI – BU – Í isolated in the syllable or accompanied by “s”.
The rest - TRA - DU - ZI / RE - PRO - DU - ZI and DIS - TIN - GUI, as we can see, are not accentuated, so it does not lead us to any of these aspects mentioned above.
