Types of subject. What are the types of subject?

Talking about types of subject, we've already studied a little bit about them. If you don't remember, access the text "prayer: subject and predicate”. But don't worry, together we'll remember the content by analyzing the following example:

Pedro is a good boy.

In this case, we have:

Subject: Peter
Predicate: is a good boy

Thus, we have that the subject is the term we inform something about (Peter), and predicate is the term that informs something about the subject (he is a good boy).

Well, from now on we will be a little more adept in this matter, as we will know what types of subject are. Let's go then?

The subject is divided into five categories

simple subject

We call a simple subject that which has only one nucleus. And do you know what the core is?

When we say “core”, we immediately think of “center”. So, the subject's nucleus is the most important word that exists within the subject, that is, if it is removed, the information will be meaningless. So, let's go back to the previous example:

Pedro is a good boy.

In this case we have a simple subject, whose core (the most valuable word) is Pedro.

compound subject

It is one that has more than one core, that is, it can have two, three, or even more cores. Look at the example, which you will soon understand:

Me and my friends we went to the movies.

We realized that there are two cores in this prayer (me and my friends).

Hidden subject

As the name itself indicates, the hidden subject is the one that is not clear, apparent, in the prayer. But can we identify him through another clue?

First, let's take an example:

I woke up happy.

We found that the ending of the verb wake up (I woke up) refers to the first person singular (in this case, “I”) of the perfect past tense of the indicative mood.

Thus, even if the subject is not expressed, we can perceive it through the verbal ending, that is, this is how we identify which person he is referring to.

Indeterminate subject

Once again we are faced with a subject that does not appear clearly either, and he only relates to two specific cases. How about meeting them?

* When the verb is in the third person plural and does not refer to any word already mentioned in the sentence:

Studied for evaluations. (who? - they)

Now, notice this other case:

Students have shown that they are applied. Studied for evaluations.

Is the subject the same as the previous one?

Certainly not, because the verb to study is now referring to a subject that already exists, which in this case is “the students”.

* When the verb is in the third person singular, accompanied by the pronoun “se”. Note:

Child players needed.

Prayer without a subject or non-existent subject

This type is so named because the predicate does not refer to any type of subject. Another issue is that it is related to some specific cases, which we should be aware of. Understand what they are:

* When the verb of the prayer indicates a phenomenon of nature, such as: raining, thundering, flashing, snowing, among others.

It rained a lot yesterday.

It thundered a lot.

* When the verb “haver” indicates the idea of existing or when it indicates the notion of a time that has passed. To make it even clearer, let's look at some cases:

There are boys playing in the yard. (There are boys playing in the yard)

I haven't visited my grandparents for two months. (two months have passed)

* In the case of the verbs “to do” and “to be” when they indicate weather or climate. We will see?

It's been a few years since I moved from that town. (It's been a few years since I live there anymore)

It's cold today. (climate)

* With the verb “to be” indicating date, time and distance. Look:

It's October tenth. (date)

It's two o'clock. (hour)

It's four kilometers from here to there. (distance)
