Many people think that rusty objects cause tetanus and that punctures and cuts are of concern only in these cases. However, tetanus is not caused by rust, and it is not just these objects worn over time that carry the etiologic agent of the disease.
→ What is tetanus?
tetanus is a disease infectious disease caused by the toxin produced by a bacterium named in Clostridium tetani. The disease causes muscle tension, can affect neck muscles and trigger difficulty in swallowing or even affect the muscles of the abdomen and diaphragm, which can result in failure respiratory. This disease can cause death.
→ How is tetanus transmitted?
the bacteria Clostridium tetani, which lives in the intestines of animals, can be found in soil, dust and feces. It produces spores that, when they come into contact with wounds, necrotic tissue and burnt tissue, can trigger the disease.
There is also neonatal tetanus, also called seven-day disease. This disease is transmitted soon after birth and can be triggered by the use of contaminated objects when cutting the cord or by covering the stump with unsanitary products.
→ What is the relationship between tetanus and rust?
As we have seen, tetanus transmission occurs due to the penetration of bacterial spores into lesions. Any object can cause illness, as long as it is contaminated. However, many people associate the disease with rusty objects, as they are exposed for a long time and, therefore, more prone to contact with the tetanus bacillus. However, this is not the only form of transmission, since the bacteria can be in different places.
→ How can I prevent tetanus and what is the treatment?
THE vaccination against tetanus is the only way to prevent the disease. For a person to be immune, it is necessary that at least three doses of vaccine are taken: the triple, the double vaccine and a booster dose every 10 years. If you get the disease, it is necessary that the treatment is done. For this, antibiotics, some muscle relaxants and immunoglobulins (antibodies) are used.
Curiosity: Did you know that tetanus has been known for over 2000 years?
