Political science is the discipline that is dedicated to studying the political systems, institutions, processes and phenomena in a given government or state.
This is an area that seeks to understand the structure and changes in government processes or any system of organization that guarantees security, justice and civil rights to citizens. She also analyzes the different political behaviors that exist, especially in the processes of struggle that aim at the distribution of powers within the State.
This term was first coined by Professor Herbert Baxter Adams of Johns Hopkins University in 1880.
To carry out its studies, political science uses several other areas of human knowledge, especially those more related to the social sciences, as a large part of of the theories that underlie the studies of political science come from the fields of study of economics, law, history, anthropology, public administration, among others.
The scholar in this area is called political scientist. They can study institutions, companies, unions, churches or any other organization whose structure and process of action is similar to that of a government.

In Brazil, training in political science does not have as much tradition as in other countries. It is seen as a specific field of knowledge, covering several areas of knowledge in the human sciences and applied social sciences. However, there is an increasing demand for the course.
It has an average duration of four years, divided into eight semesters where students study politics. broadly understood, that is, the formation of political parties, institutions and governments, policies public, etc.
