Meaning of Hypocrisy (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Hypocrisy means pretend, falsehood; fake feelings, beliefs, virtues, which in reality doesn't have. Hypocrisy derives from Latin and Greek and meant the representation in the theater of actors wearing masks, according to the role they played in a play.

A hypocrite is someone who hides reality through a mask of appearance. Later it came to designating the people they represent, and those who fake behaviors. Hypocrisy is also used in a double sense, when someone believes that one group of moral norms fits one group, and another group fits other moral norms. A hypocrite often pretends to have good qualities to hide his faults, and that is why he is also known as a deceitful person.

In religion there are several examples of hypocrisy in the New Testament, where hypocrites are remembered in many biblical passages.

In the music world, Brazilian artist Lulu Santos describes the hypocrisy in "Tempos Modernos" as a wall "that insists on surrounding us". Still regarding hypocrisy, Cazuza stated: "What I hate most is complicated and prejudiced people, hypocrisy and being woken up. Nothing else can be worse than that."
