Meaning of Except (What It Means, Concept and Definition)

Except is a preposition used for indicate an exception or exclusion condition.

Before the New Orthographic Agreement came into force, in Portugal the word was written with "p", ie, except. However, the spelling agreement indicates that letters that are not pronounced should be excluded. So, even in Portugal the word is now except and not except.

For many people, there is also the question between except or except. The correct spelling is except and not except, and the latter is not in the Portuguese language dictionary.

In English, the word except is translated by except. Ex: All my friends were at the party, except John. / All my friends were at the party, except João.

Some synonyms for except are: saved, outside, excluding.

It can also mean "less". For example, the phrase "Our store is open every day except holidays" means that the store is open every day except holidays.

Legal meaning of except

At the legal framework, the word except designates an individual to whom an exception is imposed. There are three types of exception: incompetence, suspicion and impediment.

It is an indirect form of defense, where the defendant indicates a fact that prevents the judge from operating in the case in question. In the case of exception of impediment or suspicion, the judge is the exception. In the exception of relative incompetence, the ex is the author.
