Meaning of Violence (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Violence means to use the aggressiveness intentionally and excessively to threaten or commit any act that results in accident, death or psychological trauma.

Violence manifests itself in different ways, in wars, torture, ethnic-religious conflicts, prejudice, murder, hunger, etc. It can be identified as violence against women, children and the elderly, sexual violence, urban violence, etc. There is also verbal violence, which causes moral damage, which is often harder to forget than physical damage.

The word violence comes from the Latin “violence”, which means “vehemence, impetuosity”. But in its origin it is related to the term “violation” (violate).

When it comes to human rights, violence encompasses all acts of violation of rights: civil (freedom, privacy, equal protection); social (health, education, security, housing); economic (employment and salary); cultural (manifestation of the culture itself) and political (political participation, vote).

Domestic violence

Domestic violence is the type of violence that occurs in a family context, that is, between relatives. It could be between father and mother, between parents and children, etc. Sexual abuse of children and mistreatment of the elderly also constitute domestic violence. There are five types of domestic violence: physical, psychological, sexual, patrimonial and moral. Every day, around 2,000 people file complaints with the police, claiming to have suffered domestic violence.

Urban violence

Urban violence is also a type of violation of criminal law. It consists of the practice of various crimes against people (murder, robbery and kidnapping), and against the public heritage, negatively influencing the interaction between people and the quality of life. This type of violence manifests itself particularly in large cities.

One of the main factors that generates urban violence is the rapid and disorderly growth of cities. As a consequence, serious social problems arise such as hunger, misery, unemployment and marginalization, which associated with the inefficiency of public security policies contribute to the increase in acts of violence.
