Meaning of DMA (What it is, Concept and Definition)

DMA is an acronym related to the world of technology that means Direct Memory Access, or in Portuguese Direct Memory Access. DMA is a feature of most computers. modern which enables certain hardware subsystems within the computer access system memory, without depending on the central processing unit (CPU).

DMA is a motherboard feature that enables peripherals to have direct access to RAM memory, without overloading the processor. With DMA, data transfers occur without CPU intervention for every byte that is transferred. In this way, data transfer takes place much faster. Many hardware systems use the DMA process, including disk controllers, video cards, network cards, and sound cards.

This method of data transfer takes place on specific DMA channels. There are 8 DMA channels, which are numbered from 0 to 7. On channels 0 to 3, transfers occur at 8 bits, and these channels are intended to ensure compatibility with older peripherals. On the other channels, transfers are made at 16 bits.
