Many hardware systems use the DMA process, including disk controllers, video cards, network cards, and sound cards.
This method of data transfer takes place on specific DMA channels. There are 8 DMA channels, which are numbered from 0 to 7. On channels 0 to 3, transfers occur at 8 bits, and these channels are intended to ensure compatibility with older peripherals. On the other channels, transfers are made at 16 bits.
