Meaning of Ebenezer (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Ebenezer means help stone, or gratitude, is a term in Hebrew.

Ebenezer is a village in Ephraim (the region of Canaan), where the Philistines defeated the Israelites and took the Ark of the Covenant.

Later the Israelites defeated the Philistines and regained the Ark of the Covenant. At this point, the prophet Samuel lifted a stone and called it Ebenezer, to commemorate the victory in a place where they had previously been defeated (where about 34,000 Israelites were killed in combat).

The term also appears in the Bible, where Samuel took the stone where the victory was celebrated, called it Ebenezer and said the phrase: "So far the Lord has helped us", currently the location of the stone.

Ebenézer is also the name of cities in Australia, Canada and the United States.

Ebenezer Howard

Ebenezer Howard was an English pre-urbanist author of the work Garden Cities of To-morrow, which described a city in which people lived in harmony with nature. This work inspired the creation of the garden cities movement.
