UNICEF is the acronym for United Nations Children's Fund, in English "United Nations Children's Fund" and is an agency of the United Nations. UNICEF aims to promote the defense of children's rights, meet their basic needs and contribute to their development, and is present in 191 countries and territories around the world.
UNICEF is governed by the Rights of the Child and works to convert these rights into permanent ethical principles and international codes of conduct for children. UNICEF is headquartered in New York, United States.
After World War II, many children in Europe, the Middle East and China were left orphaned, without family, without food and much more. Then, a group of countries brought together by the United Nations (UN) decided to create a fund to help these children, and since then the Organization has remained in the activity.
UNICEF is the only global organization dedicated specifically to children. It works directly with country governments to create development programs in the health, education, nutrition, water and sanitation and also to defend and protect children who are victims of violence.
In Brazil, UNICEF is active throughout the territory, however, it prioritizes the North and Northeast regions, where social indices are lower. To help the most disadvantaged elements of childhood, UNICEF supports projects from various institutions throughout Brazil.
