Hierarchical Level Meaning (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Hierarchical level is a scale that ranks placements that go from the lowest to the highest level.

It can represent hierarchies, grades or positions and is used for numerous purposes. The hierarchical level represents an order that places people or activities in the order of subordination to one another.

The concept of hierarchical level can also be applied in other broader and more complex areas, such as the hierarchy of laws, urban, among others.

What is the role of the hierarchical level?

Hierarchical levels are important to determine the form of organization. They determine what responsibilities and roles must be performed by each person within an organization or a governing body.

Likewise, they can represent the hierarchy of classification of cities or law enforcement.

Corporate or institutional hierarchical level

Each agency or company has its form of organization, with specific positions that are determined according to the activities developed.

For example, the hierarchy in a company or public agency can range from the role of assistant to the position of general manager.

To occupy some positions, it is necessary to have specific training in a certain area and work experience in the function that will be developed.

See now an example of hierarchical levels that can exist in an organization:

Hierarchical level
President or General Director
Director (of sector or area)
General Manager or Administrator
Manager (of sector or area)
Supervisor or Coordinator
Assistant or Auxiliary
Operational

Hierarchical level of laws

In a legal system, the different types of laws that exist are also subject to a hierarchical level. This means that some laws have priority of enforcement over others. Thus, the hierarchy of laws is relevant to resolve conflicts over which law should be applied in a given case.

Another application of the hierarchy of laws refers to the review of constitutionality of laws. In short, this control is the verification that a legislation (such as a decree, for example) is in accordance with the principles established in the Federal Constitution.

Simply put, the hierarchy of laws can be established as follows:

hierarchy of laws
1st - Federal Constitution and International Human Rights Treaties
2nd - Complementary Laws
3rd - Ordinary Laws, Treaties and Provisional Measures
4th - Provisional Measures and Delegated Laws
5th - Decrees
6th - Resolutions and Ordinances

urban hierarchical level

The urban hierarchical level (or urban hierarchy) corresponds to the format and classification of cities, according to their form of organization. It is divided as follows: metropolises, capitals, regional centers and cities.

This classification is important, for example, to verify the degree of influence that a city has in relation to others, in addition to indicating the geographic and social importance of a place.

The classification, which was created by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), takes into account several factors, such as:

  • the size of the city,
  • the number of inhabitants,
  • types of services that are offered to citizens,
  • location economic data.
