Left and right is an expression that used in the phrase "He shot left and right," or "He hit left and right," refers to a a person who felt threatened or cornered and attacked everyone within reach, not caring whether they were friends or enemies. Left and right is a very old expression, which can also be found in other languages, such as French (à tort et à travers).
Some authors claim that the term "left and right" originated in popular fairs in Europe, where it was possible finding blind people who beg and who were often purposely provoked by guys who just wanted to see them angry. These, at the height of their fury, waved their batons in any way, often hitting innocent people, that is, assaulting people left and right.
