"Take the horse out of the rain" or "take the horse out of the rain", is a popular expression in Portuguese, which means to give up something, to abandon pretensions, to lose illusions.

In the 19th century and until the train reached its great level of popularity, the horse was the most practical and common means of transport. It was a medium that had many advantages, and one of them was knowing how long a visitor intended to stay in your home. When the visitor in question arrived and tied the horse in front of the house, it meant that the visit would be brief. However, if he took the horse somewhere more sheltered from the rain and sun, that meant the visit would definitely take some time.
At that time, keeping the horse (in the stable, for example) without the permission of the owner of the house was a very serious lack of education, and so normally the visitors left the horse at the front of the House. On some occasions, when the host was happy with the presence of his visitor and wanted this if she stayed for a while longer, he would tell her to "get the horse out of the rain" and put it in a more protected. By saying this, the owner of the house was telling his guest to give up the idea of leaving quickly. Over time, the expression gained a broader meaning, and it means giving up any purpose. The horse also gained the diminutive, which is a mark of irony in the expression.
