Meaning of Dialect (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Dialect is a own language of certain communities and that it exists simultaneously with the other language. As in Brazil there is hillbilly dialect, a way of expressing oneself from the interior of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Paraná, which coexists with the Portuguese language.

The dialect has its own linguistic marks, semantic structure, lexicon and phonological, morphological and syntactic characteristics. It is usually restricted to a regional community.

It is a linguistic variant that originates in another language. It does not necessarily originate in the official language of the territory in which the dialect is spoken.

Sometimes, in the community, only the local dialect is spoken, without using the official language of the country. In some places of Italian colonization in Rio Grande do Sul, for example, there are villages that speak only the dialect of Veneto, Northern Italy, and internally Portuguese is not spoken.

Sociolinguistics argues that there are factors other than regional that determine a dialect. And that there are so-called

age dialects (with the marked differences between the forms of expression from generation to generation) and social dialects (between different social groups).

Some linguists understand the Portuguese spoken in Brazil as a brazilian dialect, due to the great structural differences between the way one speaks and writes in Brazil and in Portugal.

Between the synonyms in dialect are the words language and speak.

The word idiom is not an exact synonym of dialect, since idiom is a politically characterized term, referring to the official language of a country.

They are examples of dialects in Brazil the Minas Gerais dialect, the Gaucho dialect, the Bahian dialect and the Rio de Janeiro dialect.

Dialect and Accent

Dialect and accent are not the same thing. The dialect is characterized by the language structure of a group, whether the words are different, the way in which sentences are constructed, and so on. The accent is the pronunciation, the way you speak. It is marked by the rhythm with which words are expressed verbally, the different sounds in speech. For example, in Brazil it is said that miners speak by cutting words:

  • mineirin (mineirinho)
  • quiet (quiet)

In Rio de Janeiro, the accent is marked by the so-called wheeze, the sound of CH or X:

  • left (left)
  • Excola (school)

The different sounds are accent marks, not a dialect.
