Meaning of Vulgar (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Vulgo is the term used to refer to a popular class, a person who is part of the people, that is, it belongs to the majority of individuals.

Etymologically, this word comes from the Latin vulgar or volgus, which means “crowd” or “people”.

Vulgus is someone known as belonging to the plebs, a synonym for common man, in the sense of not belonging to any exclusive or aristocratic social group.

In Portuguese, vulgar is also used as an adverb to refer to someone who is popularly known.

Example:“Former President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva, aka “Lula”.

In this case, it is indicated that “Lula” is the name by which the former President is commonly known.

Vulgus is often confused as a pejorative term, related to vulgarity, but it has nothing to do, it is just used to name a popular class, and also to signal another name or nickname, by which a certain person is known.
