Meaning of Assertive (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Assertive is an adjective relating to quality of something that is affirmative, positive and right, as a behavior or action, for example.

One assertive person, according to behavioral psychology, consists of the safe and confident way of acting, that is, an individual who is sure of their actions, attitudes and behavior. Also according to psychological studies, people's behavior can be divided into four main categories: aggressive, passive, passive-aggressive and assertive.

In this case, when saying that a person is assertive, it means that they have a balanced behavior, not being too aggressive or too submissive.

In the professional sphere, assertive posture is considered a quality at work, as it represents the rational balance of the individual, enabling him to know how to identify the best actions for the most timely.

Some people confuse the correct spelling of this term with “accurate”, as they believe it derives directly from the word “certain”, in reference to the meaning it has. But,

"acertivo" is wrong and does not exist in Portuguese. The correct spelled form is assertive (with the “ss”).

Some of the main synonyms for assertive are: affirmative, positive, assertive, declarative and declaratory.

In English, the correct translation for “assertive” is assertive.
