watchtower is a term of Arabic origin and means observation tower. Designates any place higher or high point from where you watch. The term also designates the person who is in charge of guarding a certain area. In this case, it is synonymous with sentry or lookout. It is also the term to designate the highest hill in a mountain range.
"To be on the lookout" is an expression that indicates the act of being on guard, on the lookout, vigilant and with meaning to something that may be about to happen or someone who may be approaching.
