And pluribus unum is a Latin expression that means "out of many, one", and is known to be the national motto of the United States of America.

As a motto, this expression would have been chosen by the first Grand Committee in 1776, in the early days of the American Revolution, at the direction of Pierre Eugene du Simitiere, an American patriot of Spotlight.

In this context, and pluribus unum symbolized the uniting the thirteen independent US colonies as a single nation.

In Brazil, this same Latin phrase serves as Mongaguá city motto, in the metropolitan region of Baixada Santista, in São Paulo.

In Portugal, and pluribus unum is a popular phrase for being the motto used by the Sport Lisboa e Benfica football team since February 28, 1904.

At first, this expression would have been collected from the poem “Moretum”, authored by the Roman writer Virgil, around the year 55 BC. Ç.

However, interestingly, the original intent of this sentence was related to the recipe for a salad. In "color est e pluribus unum"

, Virgílio wanted to show how the mixture of different colors of different types of vegetables and vegetables in a salad should look.
