Meaning of the Festa julina (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Festa julina is an expression that makes reference to the traditional June festivals, but when are these held during the month of July.

There is a great debate around the use of the expression “Julina parties”. Some people claim that it is just an alternative created so that those who cannot celebrate June's festivities can celebrate during the following month.

However, other groups disregard this argument, as they say that the famous June festivals have already taken root and are well characterized in society. For this reason, June festivities could be celebrated in any month of the year, without people failing to understand the meaning of these festivities.

With the creation of julina parties, however, many people end up getting confused, trying to understand the difference between the two parties.

The julina festivities are set up exactly like the festivities that are normally celebrated in June, with the same elements and symbols patterns, such as square dancing, bonfire, “wedding in the countryside” and typical foods (which may vary slightly according to the region of the country. Brazil).

June celebration

The June festivities are the meeting of the three main religious festivities that take place during the month of June: St. Anthony's Day (June 13th), Saint John's day. Or the Day of Free Masonry (June 24) and Saint Peter (June 29).

These festivities have existed since the Middle Ages, as a celebration of the so-called Popular Saints.

The June festivities emerged in Europe and were brought to Brazil by the Portuguese, during the country's colonization period.

However, when arriving here, this custom suffered an intense miscegenation with traditions and cults characteristic of other ethnic groups, such as the indigenous and Africans, who also held celebrations during the winter solstice (which takes place in the month of June in the Hemisphere South).

The typical foods of the Brazilian June festival are examples of the influences brought by the indigenous people, such as the use of dishes made with corn and manioc.
