sauce beards is a popular expression of the Portuguese language. The complete expression is "to soak the beards" or "to soak the beards" and means that the person in question must be patient, alert, prudent.

expression source

In antiquity and the Middle Ages, the beard was a symbol of honor and power. When an individual's beard was cut off by another, it was a great humiliation. This idea has come to the present day in the expression "letting the beards to soak", which means to be on guard, to be on the safe side. Since beards were so important at the time, soaking them would then be a way to protect one's honor.

There is a Spanish proverb that says, "When you see your neighbor's beards catch fire, soak yours," indicating that we should all learn from the experiences of others.

This proverb points to a second theory that explains the origin of the expression "to soak the beards". According to some scholars, this expression derived from the height of poverty in ancient Brazil when the rural houses were close together and covered with a type of grass called "bargas", much like the thatch. Inside these houses there were wood stoves, and from them sparks often jumped from the chimneys. Sometimes these sparks ignited the roof of the house. Due to this fact, the habit of the neighbor of the house that was on fire arose to wet his own roof, thus preventing the flames from passing into his house. Then came the expression: "Put the bars of sauce that the neighbor's house is on fire!" How to pass over time, the expression changed and turned: "Put the beards to soak because the neighbor's is burning".
