Perception is the feminine noun with Latin origin perceptione and that describes the act, effect or ability to perceive something.
There are several types of perception, including:
- Visual perception: is interpretation of certain visual stimuli, where the person in question obtains some type of information through their eyes.
- social perception - Consists of the ability to see and interpret the behavior of other individuals and is essential for social interaction.
- musical perception - is the ability of an individual to recognize and perceive sound, rhythm and melody. Musical perception can include the identification of chords, intervals, solfeggios, etc.
In addition, there are types of perception that are related to the other senses, such as: auditory perception (beeps), tactile perception (information relating to touch), olfactory perception (relating to smell) and taste perception (related to taste).
Sensory and extrasensory perception
It is known as sensory perception the ability to pick up external signals through the senses and decode them.
On the other hand, extrasensory perception (or ESP) is known as the act of obtaining a certain type. knowledge by means that are not considered "normal" or that are not recognized by the science. Some examples of extrasensory perception are: telepathy (when there is transfer of content or thoughts between two people), clairvoyance (clearly see objects or events even from a distance) and precognition/precognition (knowledge of a fact that will occur in the future).
Perception in Psychology
According to psychology, perception consists of an organization and interpretation of stimuli that were received by the senses and which makes it possible to identify certain objects and events.
Perception has two stages, the sensory and the intellectual. The two complement each other, because sensations do not provide a real vision of the world, and must be worked on by the intellect.
Perception in Philosophy
It consists of a concept that describes a situation in which the spirit intuitively captures external stimuli.
Different thinkers and philosophers have described perception in different ways. For Descartes, perception is the whole act of intelligence. According to Leibniz, it is a transitory state that involves multiple processes.
