Meaning of Sublimation (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Sublimation it is a physicochemical phenomenon which consists of the direct passage of a substance from solid to gaseous state and vice versa, without going through the liquid state.

Some of the most common examples of sublimation are mothballs, iodine and dry ice.

When subjected to high temperatures, iodine goes from a solid state directly to a gaseous state. Then, if the iodine vapor is cooled, it turns directly into crystals, without going through the liquid state. Another substance that sublimes at normal atmospheric temperature is benzoic acid.

Some chemists indicate that the process of transition from gas to solid state is reverse sublimation. However, others indicate that the sublimation concept describes both passages.

In figurative meaning, sublimation can be synonymous with exaltation, purification or aggrandizement. It can also represent the transformation of lower feelings or basic instincts into higher or sublime feelings or instincts.

Sublimation in Psychology and Psychoanalysis

In psychology and psychoanalysis, sublimation was a term introduced by Sigmund Freud that designates a defense mechanism of the "I", in which certain unconscious impulses are integrated into the personality and culminate in attitudes with positive social value.

Sublimation is a process in which the energy or sexual impulse, ie the energy of the libido, is directed towards acceptable activities. It is therefore very important for an individual to adapt to their surroundings, as it enables their social setting without compromising their personal development.

An example of sublimation can be a boxing fighter, for example, who directs his aggressiveness towards the sport, since inside the ring this manifestation is socially acceptable. A painter, for example, can direct his frustrations to create a work of art, an attitude equally accepted by society.

Fabric sublimation

Sublimation is also a very popular process in making some clothes.

THE tissue sublimation consists of a method in which the ink that is contained in a sublimatic paper is transferred to a synthetic fabric. This transfer is caused by the application of pressure and heat, which cause the dye to sublimate, dyeing the fabric in question.
