Meaning of Overbooking (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Overbooking is an English expression that means overbooking, which happens when the sale or reservation of tickets or tickets exceeds the number of seats actually available in the vehicle or seat.

Typically, airlines often use overbooking to fill potential dropouts on their travels.

Many airlines suffer great losses with the withdrawal of passengers, who usually make reservations a few months in advance, but decide not to board. The consequence is the departure of many aircraft with empty seats, which might be available to others interested in traveling on that date.

Consequently, overbooked passengers are added to flights according to the number of dropouts the trip has.

The practice of overbooking is also common in hotels and restaurants.

Overbooking and pain and suffering

Overbooking can be a solution for airlines, but also a big headache for the unsuspecting passengers who end up being unable to board the plane due to lack of place.

In this case, the passenger must be aware of their rights, guaranteed by the

National Civil Aviation Agency - ANAC, which has the jurisprudence of all air travel in the national territory, and must be complied with by the airlines that "overcrowded" the aircraft.

Some of the airlines' obligations are:

  • Ensure passenger boarding on another flight of the same company;
  • Ensure food, accommodation (when necessary), ease of communication and transfer between hotel and airport until the time of travel;
  • Compensation and reimbursement of the ticket, if the passenger wants to change airlines;
