Definition of Homeostasis (What it is, Concept and Definition)

homeostasis (or homeostasis) is the trend in some organizations for balance and conservation of physiological elements and metabolism through some regulatory mechanisms.

An organism is considered to be in homeostasis when chemicals are in adequate concentrations, temperature is stable, and pressure is appropriate.

This phenomenon was first described by the French physiologist Claude Bernard and was later studied in greater depth by the American physiologist Walter Cannon.

Important in the field of biology, homeostasis is the regulatory process through which an organism manages to maintain its balance. Homeostasis is characterized by its stability and also by its unpredictability, because an action can have an opposite effect from what is expected.

In the human body, it is possible to identify several different types of homeostasis. THE water homeostasis, or osmoregulation, takes place in the kidneys and means the regulation of water within the body. Homeostasis made by the liver and pancreas (insulin secretion) serves to regulate glucose levels in the blood.

THE thermal homeostasis it is a way of balancing and controlling the temperature of the human body that is done through the skin and blood circulation. The external environment, when subjecting the body to lower temperatures, requires some changes.

In this case, the body uses more energy to maintain the temperature and in extreme situations the body sends more blood for the vital organs region, and the arms and legs, being less important, are more harmed.

THE psychological homeostasis it consists of the balance between the needs of an individual and the supply of those needs. Thus, when these needs are not met, an inner instability occurs, which is resolved with changes in behavior, which culminate in the satisfaction of these needs.

In some occasions this term is also used to describe a system that allows to maintain the stability of an internal environment, such as a company, for example.
