Meaning of Urbi et Orbi (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Urbi et Orbi means "to the city of Rome and to the world" in Portuguese, and is a Latin term. Urbi et Orbi was the opening of roman pronouncements and currently this is how the easter and christmas blessing, where the Pope addresses the general public in St. Peter's Square, Italy.

Urbi et Orbi is a blessing given by the Pope to the faithful, and it is customary for the Pontiff to carry it out in different languages, demonstrating the universality of the Church, the last time he spoke his word, he did it in 63 languages. The blessing is made from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, which is decorated with curtains and the Pope's throne placed there. The most important reason for the blessing is that it grants a penance and a plenary indulgence to the faithful, only for those who confessed, received communion and did not fall into any sin mortal.
