Meaning of Chaos (What it is, Concept and Definition)

chaos means disorder, confusion and everything that is out of balance.

In Greek mythology, Chaos is considered the primordial god of the universe, according to the narrative of the Greek poet Hesiod.

Initially, Chaos would be interpreted as the “emptiness” or the “air” that filled the space between Earth and Ether (higher heaven).

This meaning originated from the etymology of the word “chaos”, derived from the Greek khaino, which can be translated as “to separate”.

The relationship between Chaos and disorder and imbalance was only attributed by the Roman poet Ovid.

Chaos came to be seen as the opposite of his son, Eros. That is, while Eros represented the union of forces and elements, Chaos symbolized breakage, splitting and separation.

The version of the mythological story of Hesidium and Ovid tells that before the creation of Eros, the universe was in constant turmoil. All the components needed for creation were scattered and disorganized.

From then on, Chaos came to be recognized as the god of disorder.

Chaos theory

It is the principle that states that a small change or change at the beginning of an event, during this process, turns into disproportionate and unpredictable consequences.

The forerunner of scientific studies related to Chaos Theory was the American meteorologist Edward Lorenz, responsible by discovering that small factors, at first considered trivial, tend to drastically modify the consequences future.

The observations made by Lorenz gave rise to the call Butterfly Effect, due to its simplified explanation of what would be the Chaos Theory.

Lorenz said that the flapping of a butterfly's wings in Brazil could trigger a sequence of unpredictable weather events that would trigger a tornado in the United States, for example.

The "beat of the butterfly's wings" would be an initially insignificant factor, while the "tornado in the United States" would correspond to its chaotic consequence.
