Sority is the union and the alliance between women, based on empathy and fellowship, seeking to achieve common goals.
The concept of sorority is strongly present in feminism, being defined as an aspect of ethical, political and practical dimension of this movement of equality between genders.
From the point of view of feminism, sorority consists in the lack of prior judgment among women themselves who, in most of the time, they help to strengthen prejudiced stereotypes created by a macho society and patriarchal.
Sorority is one of the main foundations of feminism, since without the idea of "brotherhood" between women, the movement could not gain significant proportions to impose its claims.
The origin of the word sorority is in Latin sor, which means “sisters”. It can be considered the female version of the fraternity, which originated from the prefix frater, which means “brother”. There is no perfect synonym for sorority, but the closest words are brotherhood and fraternity (among women).
Sorority is the opposite of female rivalry and aims precisely to combat the myth that women are always rivals, encouraging support and union between them.
Selective serority
This definition is applied when there is a segregation between subgroups that are included in the set of what would be “being a woman”. That is, when sisterhood among women is based on the personal interests of certain people, ignoring empathic and altruistic companionship.
An example of selective sorority are feminists known as Terfs (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist), who do not recognize the transgender identity as a woman.
Thus, the support, unity and companionship of these feminists are selective, intended only for women from a biological point of view and not from a behavioral identity point of view.
