Tiete is a term used in Brazil that designates someone as admirer or fanatical admirer of someone, usually an artist, athlete or politician, famous people.
These are usually people who express great admiration for a public person. Tiete is nothing more than a synonym for fan.
The term groupie was attributed to the hypocoristic tiete, an admirer of Brazilian singer Ney Matogrosso, and ended up being generalized as a synonym for fan, from the late 1970s onwards.
A person who is truly a fan or groupie of someone watches all of their idol's soap operas or movies, buy all the CD's and try to go to shows as often as possible, even those that aren't even in your City.
Bahian singer Ivete Sangalo also helped immortalize the term, as she wrote a song called “Tiete”, where she asks her fans who they are a groupie, and in the final stretch, rhymes with Ivete.
