Literally, repressed means something that has been repressed over and over again. The term is used figuratively at the level of Psychoanalysis to designate an individual who suffers from repression (or repression).

Repression was initially studied by Freud and designates the mechanism through which the individual tries to eliminate from his conscious representations that he considers unacceptable.

It is an active process in which the individual tries to keep emotions, desires, memories or affects likely to conflict with the subject's view of himself or his relationship with the world.

According to Freud, this mechanism has been present since the beginning of life and it is something that contributes to a simplification of existence, and should not necessarily be considered a pathology. The pathological state is reached when the repressed drive starts to provoke displeasure instead of pleasure.

Due to characteristics such as low self-esteem, isolation, shyness or self-punishment, the term "repressed" is popularly used to designate a person who is envious or repressed, often as a form of insult.
