Mordaz is an adjective of two genders in the Portuguese language, used to qualify something or someone capable of biting or causing deterioration.
Etymologically, the word “scathing” originated from the Latin mordax, which has a similar translation to “what bites”, “spicy”, “sharp” or “corrosive”.
This term can still be used, figuratively, as something that denigrates. A scathing criticism or opinion, for example, usually has a rigid and aggressive character, intended to offend through sarcastic comments.
Example: “The guy was quite scathing in his comment about the restaurant”.
A scathing point of view, in turn, is the characteristic of someone who has a crude and rigorous way of understanding or evaluating things.
The adjective biting can also be applied to describe the taste of something, when it is sour or spicy.
Example: "The biting taste of curry did not please the customers”.
