Meaning of Wanderlust (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Wanderust is a German word that can be translated as a intrinsic and deep desire to travel.

It is formed from the addition of two other German words. Wander, which originates in the verb wandern and corresponds to the practice of walking or hiking. AND lust, which means lust, or more than a desire, a deep will.

In the German language it is common to find words that represent very specific feelings, and that we cannot find exact translations in other languages. Wanderlust is one of them.

The feeling represented by wanderlust is to want to travel the world more than anything else. It's about not feeling comfortable when you're stable in one place. It is a genuine interest in learning about new cultures and exploring environments that are not yet known.

It is said of wanderlust that the more you feed this craving, the more it grows. More places appear on the map to visit, and the more restless the person becomes to change place.

Wanderlust is a word originated from medieval German, and in the modern language it ended up falling into disuse. But since the beginning of the 20th century, English has borrowed the word and given it the same meaning. Already the Germans found an exact synonym,

fernweh. And its antonym, heimweh, which can be translated as homesickness.

The word wanderlust has been a part of traveler culture for many years, and gained notoriety with the release of the song Wanderlust by Icelandic singer Björk. But it really became popular in 2012, with the American film called Wanderlust, starring actors Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston.
