What are the phases of the moon?

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, and the second brightest celestial body in the sky is behind the Sun. It has no brightness of its own, the light we see at night reflected off the Moon is sunlight.

As the Moon rotates around the Earth in an elliptical motion called a revolution, the satellite goes through four different stages over a period of 27 days, 7 hours, and 43 minutes. Each phase of the Moon lasts approximately 7 days. The Moon also has movements of rotation (around itself) and translation (around the Sun).

  2. Crescent moon: At this stage we see only a small part of the Moon, one of the half of its faces. The illuminated side is the opposite phase of the waning moon. It is the transition phase from New Moon to Full Moon.

  3. Full moon: loved by werewolves, horror movies and passionate lovers, this most impressive phase of the Moon, in which the Sun's light fully the entire face of the Moon that is facing the Earth.

  4. waning moon: the intense luminosity of the Sun that happened during the Full Moon is diminished and what we can observe is a half of the face of the Moon being illuminated, the opposite face of the Crescent Moon.

As an influence of rural customs, people use moon phases for haircuts, fishing and planting. And the phases of the Moon also influence the tidal height of the oceans.

Why do we see the same face of the Moon?

The rotation and revolution movements of the Moon have the same duration, so we always see the face of the Moon from here on Earth.
