Capes will offer a specialization course for teachers. It will be aimed at teachers from the sixth to the ninth year of elementary school. The objective is to improve science teaching in basic education schools. The initiative was named 'Science is Ten'. It is part of the Science at School Program.

The initiative is from the Ministries of Education, Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC). Capes and CNPq also participate. Four thousand places will be offered throughout Brazil, through the Open University of Brazil (UAB).

The program will start its activities in the month of April. There will be four simultaneous actions. A public call for institutions in April, a public call for researchers (open notice), National Science Olympiad and, finally, the realization of the specialization 'Science is Ten'.

Capes president Anderson Correa explained the program. “We have a goal of specializing 50% of the professors in their areas of expertise, by 2024”, explains the president of Capes, Anderson Correa.

The program has among its objectives to improve the teaching of science in basic education schools. It also wants to promote teaching by investigation aimed at solving problems. In addition, it seeks to intensify the qualification of teachers.

“Initially, the course will be offered in 20 higher education institutions to four thousand professors. It is a lato sensu specialization course, focused on the teaching practice of question-answer research processes.

It is not the traditional theoretical teaching of science. He will prepare these teachers from basic education networks to teach science practice to their students”, details Capes' Director of Distance Education, Carlos Lenuzza.

The course's differential lies in its pedagogical form. It is a specialization without specific teaching materials, but which encourages student teachers to seek content on the internet and in subjects pre-selected by the pedagogical committee. After studying the contents, they can apply what was researched in the classroom.

Pilot

In a pilot experience, the project involved six UAB poles, over 18 months, in 2017 and 2018, in Pernambuco. In its next phase, the course will be applied in 133 centers of 20 UAB institutions, distributed throughout the five regions of Brazil.

The opening of the notices for teachers interested in taking the course will be in September. Classes are scheduled to start in February 2020.
