In the competition for girls, it only rose in production, as it won a bronze in 2017 and a silver last year. Ana Beatriz, from Ceará, has also won awards. Before the bronze in this edition, she took silver in 2018.

Brazil highlighted

Gold is unprecedented, but it is not new that Brazil stands out in the event. EGMO has been held since 2012 in different European countries. Brazil has participated since 2017, at the initiative of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) and the Brazilian Society of Mathematics (SMB).

This year it also had support from the students' schools. So far, the country has 9 medals and an honorable mention. Deborah Alves, 26, was team leader for the second time. She, who is now a teacher, but has participated in similar international competitions between 2009 and 2011.

The teacher emphasizes the importance of Olympics like this one. “It is very gratifying to know that you are one of the best people in mathematics in your country and to be able to represent you internationally. Brazil has conquered great positions, improving every year, but there is still room for improvement”, she highlights.

“It's our third participation in this competition for girls and we've already achieved a gold medal. The feat serves as an example for younger students across the country.”
