The semantic relationships between words


At Portuguese language there are different studies and one of them is the linguistics. In it, there is semantics, which comprises the meaning of words, phrases and expressions in a given context.

Thus, at times, the terms can have multiple interpretations for the reader or listener, depending on each communicative situation.

In short, the sense it is the content or information that we are able to decode by understanding a sentence. Therefore, the relationship between the different meanings attributed to a word is called the meaning relationship.

The sense relationship is classified in four ways:

  1. synonymy
  2. Antonímia
  3. Hyperonymy
  4. hyponymy

synonymy

Synonymy is understood as the content that has similarity of meaning between its words, even if distinct, that is, they are synonyms which regardless of context holds the same meaning.

Examples: Money, penny, penny, cash, money, dindim.

Antonímia

Antonymy is the exact opposite of synonymy. That is, they are antonyms, designating words or expressions with opposite meanings.

They also have a recurrent use in poetry that presents the antithesis (relation of opposing ideas).

Examples: Scalding, hot, warm, cool, cold, freezing.

Hyperonymy and Hyponymy

Hyperonymy is a term for the “whole-part”. In other words, it is the word whose meaning encompasses a set of words with the most specific meaning.

On the other hand, the words with the most specific meaning are your hyponomials.

Examples: Insects (butterflies, fly, mosquito), sports (soccer, swimming, basketball), mammals (cat, dog), vehicles (motorcycle, car, truck).
