THE legend of redbeard originates from Northeast region and tells the story of the mermaid's son Iara, known for chasing girls who go by lakes.
Redbeard legend
Legend has it that the eldest daughter of a widow fell ill and no one knew why. Then it was discovered that she was pregnant with her mother's deceased boyfriend. Overcome with shame, the young woman ran away from home, placed her baby in a basket and sent him to the waters of the River Paranagua, in Piauí.
Despite the danger, the boy was not helpless. Iara saved him from a terrible drowning and thus became aware of that mother's attitudes. Enraged, Iara flooded the place and created a pond.
Local residents claim to hear a baby crying in this place and the women tell of a strange experience. Those visiting the water reported a tall, strong, red-haired man across the river.
According to legend, man ages throughout the day, starting as a child and ending as an old man, then starting again the next day.
