Classification of words with am, in, im, om, a
The syllables am, in, im, om, um are vowel digraphs. Vowel digraphs occur when there is a union of two distinct letters forming a single vowel sound.
However, renowned grammarians claim that when am and in are in final position in the word they do not form digraphs, but diphthongs, since in the diphthong a vowel and a semivowel (m) pronounced in a single syllable produces two phonemes. Example: sing, too, etc.
